Deeds Not Words

A forthcoming event which forms part of our programme to mark the centenary of votes for women in the UK. It is also the borough’s contribution to BBC Civilisations, a season of programming across the BBC (TV, radio, online) including a major series on BBC Two and a festival of related events around the country.

“Deeds Not Words” will take place at Merton Arts Space on Saturday 3 March from 2:30 to 4:30pm.

It will be an open discussion about the impact of women’s suffrage on life in the UK. Using archive film, displays and artefacts, we will consider how much has really changed for UK women over the past century and the media portrayal of women in politics and the public eye.

We are very fortunate to have a range of guest speakers including:
• Gwyn Redgers, Merton U3A (an experienced debater, who will chair the session)
• Dr. Stella Moss, Cultural and social historian, Royal Holloway, University of London.
• Kathy Atherton, author and women’s suffrage historian, Dorking Museum and Heritage Centre.
• Philippa Bilton, close relative of suffragette Emily Wilding Davison.

We are also keen for audience members to participate in the discussion by sharing their thoughts on this subject.

This is a free event but bookings should be made via or by contacting Merton Heritage Centre, Tel. 02085453239, email:
